Star Award for Nios II Embedded Processor Design Contest 2007 (South Asia/Pacific Region) (12th March 2008)

The Nios II Embedded Processor Design Contest aims to increase the students' interest in embedded processor while improving their design capability and creativity and motivates the development of System-on-a-Programmable Chip (SOPC) system design. This design contest will use Altera's Nios II family of soft-core embedded processors that is optimized for programmable logic and SOPC integration.

A team from CHiPES that comprised of two graduate students, Muhamed Fauzi Bin Abbas and Ku Wei Chiet together with their supervisor, Prof. Thambipillai Srikanthan was awarded the Star Award this year for their project “RTOS Acceleration using Instruction Set Customization”. In this project, the team presented an efficient method for reducing the CPU overheads of the RTOS by identifying RTOS operations that are executed frequently and converting them into custom instructions.
